News: ALA Responds to EPA Ozone Standard Update, Impact on Public Health

On October 1, 2015, EPA announced an updated ozone standard of 70 parts per billion (70ppb) to protect public health from the dangers of breathing unhealthy amounts of ozone pollution. This is an improvement compared to the previous outdated standard of 75ppb.

The stronger standard sets a better target for actions to clean up pollution to protect the health of people in every community. Updating the standard regularly is a crucial requirement under the Clean Air Act. We need to be aiming at the right target, based on what the current science shows we need to do to protect our children and people with lung disease.

It provides more health protection than the previous standard of 75 ppb, preventing asthma attacks and saving lives. However, the American Lung Association, Mothers & Others for Clean Air,  and other national health and medical organizations called for an even more protective standard based on what the science shows is necessary to protect the most vulnerable. We won’t stop fighting until everyone has safe, healthy air to breathe.
