News: Advocacy Training in North Carolina

Medical and public health professionals have a unique perspective that can inform policymakers, patients and the public at large on the impact of air pollution and climate change on our health, and especially children’s health. Mothers & Others For Clean Air provided advocacy training for healthcare professionals at Community Health Centers in west, middle and east North Carolina. Participants learned about health impacts of climate change and air pollutants, how to communicate their concerns via media interviews, editorials and letters to the editor. They learned about the power of personal stories, role-played testifying at hearings and meeting with elected officials.

Many thanks go to Dr. Jennifer Caicedo with Charlotte’s Asthma & Allergy Specialists, P.A., Dr. Anne-Mellinger-Birdsong and Deborah Bryan for leading the trainings.  Many of the training tips are provided on our Health Professionals Toolkit for Action on this website.
