M&O Project Manager Alison Jones testified in support of a strong state Clean Power Plan for North Carolina at a December 17 hearing in Raleigh. The hearing was one of three being held by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The DEQ’s Division of Air Quality intends to challenge the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate carbon emissions from power plants by submitting a state plan that intentionally does not comply with the recently-adopted federal rule.

At the hearing, Alison and other health advocates called for a state plan that is more protective of public health. “The effect of greenhouse gases, leading to a change in climate, impacts our health through degraded air quality, wildfires, drought, heat waves and more,” Alison explained. “We need a strong Clean Power Plan in place for North Carolina to cut carbon pollution and lessen the burden on the health of our citizens.”
